Non-Places in India

Photography

A few years ago, in another life, I was sent to India for two weeks to do corporate research for a well-known drinks brand. I travelled alone between Delhi, Mumbai, Kanpur and Hyderabad, staying in a series of chain hotels, meeting various business people.

I thought that the trip might allow for an immersion in various Indian cultures.  Instead, my journey was formed around an endless series of anonymous non-places: hotel meeting rooms, airport waiting areas, taxis.

I had a Yashica T4 and some 35mm slide film with me, and documented these moments of transience across the trip. The haziness of the photos captures something about the isolation I felt. I didn’t get to know any of these places, or speak meaningfully with anyone I met.
